Alexandria retailers most often confuse four things: routine trash service and one-time commercial junk removal, optional and mandatory recycling, City service and a private hauler, and a store cleanout and weekly pickup. Businesses must recycle the two materials they generate most, and private haulers need a City permit. This guide sorts each mistake into a clear next step.

Most mistakes start with picking the wrong kind of service. Match your situation to the route below before you call anyone.
| Your situation | Right route |
| Weekly trash and recycling for an open store | A private hauler permitted by the City, or City service if the City accepts your property |
| Store closing, tenant turnover or fixture removal | One-time commercial junk removal or a store cleanout |
| Old furniture, shelving or back-room contents | Commercial junk removal after a scope and estimate |
| Mercury, chemicals or hazardous items | Hazardous waste channels, not a standard cleanout |
| Confidential records or data devices | A certified destruction specialist |
If your need is on the second or third row, Dumpire LLC can help. For the rest, use the steps below.
Commercial junk removal clears a defined set of items on a scheduled visit. Routine trash pickup empties containers on a repeating schedule. They are different jobs with different providers, and a dumpster is a third option with its own trade-offs, covered in our comparison of dumpster rental vs junk removal in Northern Virginia.
Dumpire LLC provides commercial junk removal in Alexandria from a crew based in McLean, VA, for store closings, tenant turnovers, fixture and shelving removal and back-room cleanouts. It does not advertise routine trash collection. Recurring junk pickup is possible only after Dumpire confirms capacity and terms in writing. If you need weekly service, use the permitted-hauler route in Mistake 4.
Every commercial business in the City must run an active recycling program under the mandatory recycling ordinance passed on July 1, 2006. The City’s business recycling page says each business must recycle the two materials it generates in the largest quantities.
The City’s list of materials includes:
Single-stream recycling is an acceptable substitute for source-separated recycling. Count what your store actually throws out, then pick your top two.
The Recycling Implementation Plan, or RIP form, is how the City tracks business recycling. The City says the RIP form is required of all commercial properties regardless of the refuse hauler they choose, so the City can meet its state reporting requirements.
The City provides the form online on its business recycling page. Because City pages describe the filing schedule differently, follow the notification you receive from the City rather than relying on a date from a third-party article.
Alexandria requires solid waste and recycling haulers to hold permits for the vehicles and containers they use. The permit applies to municipal solid waste, construction and demolition debris, yard waste, bulk waste, food waste, grease and recyclables collected inside City limits.
Permits are issued every July 1 and run through June 30, so always check the current year’s list. Use this check before you sign:
Alexandria collects residential trash on a weekly schedule. Commercial properties are not required users of City service. The City may serve them at its discretion, once a week, when they qualify as a “non-required user.”
To enroll, the property owner or their agent must sign a service agreement with the City’s Resource Recovery Division. Plan on a private hauler as your default and treat City service as something you apply for, not something that arrives automatically.
When a store closes or a tenant turns over, the leftover fixtures, shelving and back-room contents do not belong in the regular dumpster or recycling bin. Large, bulky or mixed loads are a separate stream, and sorting them first protects both your recycling program and your lease deadline.
Separate three things before any crew arrives: recyclables you already collect, items for removal, and anything sensitive or regulated. Dumpire LLC reviews the item list, photos and access details first, then gives you a scope-based estimate before work starts.
All new non-residential construction and large-scale renovations are subject to the City’s special use permit requirements for solid waste and recyclable storage space. The applicant must provide room for trash and recycling containers as outlined in the City’s guidelines, or to the satisfaction of the Director of Transportation and Environmental Services. Raise it with your architect early, and contact Planning and Zoning at 703.746.4035 for permitting questions.
A clean handover is mostly preparation. Our guide on how to prepare for a junk removal appointment covers the basics for any job; for a store, work through this list:
Dumpire LLC serves Old Town, Del Ray, the West End, Carlyle and Eisenhower, and Potomac Yard. The City’s refuse guidance notes that in most Old Town neighborhoods, City-collected trash is picked up in alleys, so agree on the entrance and loading spot for a private crew in advance rather than assuming the same spot works. In any neighborhood, share the street entrance, floor, carrying distance, parking limits and landlord rules when you request an estimate.
Tell Dumpire LLC what needs to leave, where it sits and when the space must be ready. We review your photos and building requirements, then give a clear estimate before loading begins. See everything we handle on our junk removal in Alexandria page, or request your commercial estimate now.

It is the one-time removal of unwanted business items that are not part of routine trash service. Dumpire LLC evaluates office and workplace furniture, retail shelving and display items, tenant-turnover contents, break-room contents, boxes and packaging, storage-room cleanouts and approved renovation debris.
Items that need separate review or may fall outside a standard cleanout include industrial equipment, confidential records, data-bearing devices, food waste, chemicals, hazardous material, regulated waste, biohazards, structurally attached fixtures and unusually heavy items. Ask before booking.
Dumpire LLC provides a free estimate and prices the approved scope. Cost depends on volume, weight and material, dismantling needs, elevator, dock and parking access, crew size and service window, the number of loads or locations, and processing and disposal requirements. Larger jobs may need a walkthrough.
A commercial customer that is a non-required user may stop City service and hire a permitted private hauler. The City asks you to notify its Resource Recovery Division by email or mail and update your RIP form to reflect the change in service.
The City’s Resource Recovery Division can do a site visit to identify recyclable materials, suggest container size, location and collection frequency, and help with signage. Call 703.746.4135 or email CommercialRecycling@alexandriava.gov.
Requested service windows can be considered based on crew availability, property rules and project size. After-hours service is not guaranteed until Dumpire confirms it in writing, so mention your building’s hours when you request the estimate.
