These organizations collect furniture without a scheduling fee. Each one still screens by condition, size and location, so check the details before you book.

Share of McLean

Share of McLean is the most local choice. Its furniture program gives free, essential furnishings to neighbors in need, many of them moving from shelters into subsidized apartments. If you live in Share’s service area of McLean, Falls Church or Arlington, volunteers pick up gently used furniture in good condition from your home at no cost. The referral you may read about applies to the families who receive furniture, not to donors.

  • How to book: leave a voicemail on the furniture hotline at 703-448-1054, text photos to 703-297-4194, or email furniture@shareofmclean.org.
  • Timing: volunteer crews collect and deliver furniture on Saturdays.
  • Good to know: sending clear photos first helps the team confirm the piece before a truck is scheduled.

Gracing Spaces

Gracing Spaces furnishes homes for Northern Virginia families starting a new chapter, usually in a small apartment, so it looks for pieces that can be moved without much help. It accepts clean, functional, gently used or new items and provides a tax-deductible donation receipt.

  • Accepts: sofas, loveseats, upholstered chairs, coffee and end tables, lamps, kitchen and dining tables and chairs, dressers, bedside tables, metal bed frames and mattresses other than king size.
  • Does not accept: very large or heavy items such as sleeper sofas, reclining sofas, futons, daybeds, china cabinets and entertainment centers, king mattresses, torn or stained upholstery, broken furniture and glass-based furniture.
  • Pickup: mainly within Fairfax County. Items should be on the ground floor near the front door or in the garage, and someone should be there to help load bulky pieces.
  • Drop-off: in Fairfax on Wednesdays between 9 and 10:30 am, arranged through the donation form.
  • How to book: fill in the online donation form with photos. The team usually replies within about two business days; if not, email donations@gracingspaces.com.

Habitat for Humanity ReStore (Chantilly)

Habitat for Humanity of Washington, D.C. & Northern Virginia sells donated items in its ReStores and uses the proceeds to build affordable homes. The nearest ReStore to McLean is in Chantilly. Items must be clean, working and sellable, and staff can decline pieces based on condition or current stock.

  • Accepts: assembled bookcases, dressers, tables, bed frames, sleepers and upholstered furniture that is free of stains, rips and pet hair, plus appliances under 10 years old with no rust.
  • Does not accept: mattresses and bedding, stained or torn upholstery, baby items, clothing and tube TVs.
  • Free pickup: a limited service for large donations in Northern Virginia. Dates can be two to three weeks out, and items must be curbside, in the driveway or in the garage because staff cannot enter homes.
  • Priority pickup: for in-home removal or pickup within 48 hours, Habitat partners with ReSupply, which charges a fee.

Vietnam Veterans of America (Pickup Please)

Vietnam Veterans of America collects donations through its Pickup Please program, and you do not need to be home when the driver arrives. The program only takes items that one person can easily lift and carry, so it suits smaller pieces rather than full rooms of furniture.

  • Does not accept: couches, sofas, sleeper sofas, mattresses, box springs or large appliances.
  • How to book: schedule online at pickupplease.org or call 1-800-775-8387. Pickup availability depends on your address, and you choose a day on the local route rather than a time.

The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army accepts furniture, appliances and household goods to fund its adult rehabilitation centers. Whether a truck comes to your street depends on your ZIP code, so start by entering your McLean ZIP code on the scheduling site.

  • How to book: schedule at satruck.org or call 1-800-SA-TRUCK (1-800-728-7825). The site also lists nearby stores and donation drop-boxes.
  • Good to know: confirm what the local center accepts before you book, especially for upholstered furniture and mattresses.

Paid and Donation-Based Furniture Pickup

When you need furniture carried out of the house, want a faster date, or have items the free programs will not take, these options cost something but still send your furniture to a charity.

A Wider Circle

A Wider Circle, based in Silver Spring, Maryland, furnishes homes for families moving out of poverty. Donations must be in “dignity condition”: gently used, clean, functional, free of rips, stains or damage, and sized for an apartment.

  • Pickup eligibility: your donation must include at least one of its most-requested items (a mattress and/or box spring, a sofa or upholstered chair, a dresser, or a dining table and/or four or more chairs) or at least three pieces of furniture.
  • Scheduling fees: with two or more weeks’ notice, curbside pickup is $20 and in-home pickup is $50. Priority pickup with less than two weeks’ notice is $250 for up to five items or $500 for six or more. Fees are non-refundable.
  • How to book: email furnish@awidercircle.org with your name, phone number, pickup address, item list, whether the crew can collect curbside or must come inside, and a photo of every furniture item.

Charlotte’s Web Enrichment Center

Charlotte’s Web accepts furniture donations from McLean, Arlington and Alexandria and passes them to families in need, including people leaving homelessness. It picks up through a request form on its McLean page, and it now asks donors for a contribution to support the cost of pickup, so do not plan on it being free. It can provide a receipt for tax purposes, and items it cannot use can be added as bulk trash for an extra fee.

Which Charity Takes Which Piece of Furniture?

Match the item first, then the pickup option. This is where most donations get turned away.

  • Sofa, loveseat or sectional: Share of McLean, Gracing Spaces (not sleeper or reclining sofas), Habitat ReStore if it has no stains, rips or pet hair, and A Wider Circle. Vietnam Veterans of America will not take it.
  • Dresser, bookcase or nightstand: almost every organization here. Bookcases must be assembled for Habitat.
  • Dining table and chairs: Gracing Spaces, Habitat ReStore and A Wider Circle, where a dining table with four or more chairs counts as a most-requested item.
  • Mattress or box spring: A Wider Circle, and Gracing Spaces for sizes other than king.
  • Small pieces such as lamps, end tables and side chairs: Vietnam Veterans of America, Gracing Spaces or the Salvation Army.
  • Very large or heavy pieces such as china cabinets, entertainment centers and sleeper sofas: hard to place with most charities. Ask Habitat about sleepers, or plan for removal.

Can You Donate a Mattress in McLean?

Yes, but only to a few organizations. Many charities, including the Habitat ReStore and Vietnam Veterans of America, will not accept mattresses or box springs. A Wider Circle lists a mattress and/or box spring among its most-requested pickup items, and Gracing Spaces accepts mattresses in every size except king. Either way, the mattress needs to be clean and in good condition, with no stains or tears.

If your mattress does not qualify, our mattress removal service takes it away for proper disposal.

Before You Request a Furniture Donation Pickup

A few minutes of preparation saves a declined pickup and a wasted wait.

  • Photograph every piece from the front and close up on any wear. A Wider Circle requires photos, and the others use them to approve items.
  • Check condition honestly: stains, rips, pet hair, odors, broken legs or loose frames are the most common reasons a donation is refused.
  • Measure large items and note stairs, narrow doorways or an elevator.
  • Stage the furniture where the program needs it: curbside, driveway or garage for Habitat’s free pickup, and ground floor near the door for Gracing Spaces.
  • Assemble flat-pack pieces such as bookcases before pickup.
  • Keep a list for your receipt: charities do not appraise donations, so you record each item’s fair market value yourself. IRS Publication 561 explains how.

What If No Charity Will Take Your Furniture?

Torn upholstery, a broken frame, a sleeper sofa or a piece you need gone this week does not have to sit in the garage. The Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services directory lists more local furniture resources if you want to keep looking. If you would rather clear everything in one visit, Dumpire LLC removes furniture from any room of your McLean home, sets aside items that can still be donated or recycled whenever possible, and hauls the rest away. You get an upfront price before we start, and same-day pickup is available based on crew availability. See our furniture removal service in McLean or call (571) 225-8453 for a free estimate.
